Video Assignment

This assignment is designed to acclimate you to the use of the video camera system, and to the process of video editing. You have already had a class training session on basic camera operation and an iMovie tutorial. The process is as follows:

1. Organize two sub-teams from Team 1; and two sub-teams from Team 2 (Ron will be part of Team 1 for this assignment and Brett will be part of Team 2.) Each team will have 3 members: a performer; a cameraperson; and an audioperson. (Brett must be the performer for his team.) All the team members should participate in the editing in some way. The 3 members will together prepare a storyboard; shoot the story; and edit it. There will be a team grade on this assignment.

(There are storyboard sheets on p. 95, 96, and 97 of the packet. Pick any one of these. Mr. Marchesani can be a consultant in the design of the storyboard. One or more team members should schedule a meeting with him in advance as soon as you can.)

2. The story is as follows: Your school or company has recently purchased a bit of simple, new computer technology to be used at the desktop level (for example: a modern Zip drive; a USB Memory Stick; or an external hard drive of some sort). Prepare a one-to-two minute video explaining to the local user what the product is for, and how to hook it up. (A future video will tell how to use it.) Use closeups of the product where appropriate. Use cutaways and cutins if needed. A title is
required, and you may use other graphics in the body of the program as desired.

3. Pay attention to the staging (where you shoot it; what’s in the background; the lighting), the audio quality, the composition, the camerawork If any), and matching the overall pace of the editing to the intended audience.

4. Teams may check out a camcorder; a battery, a tripod; and a wireless microphone system from after class on 10/2 until
10/20. You supply your own tape. Editing may be done in SEC 127 or 405 or other places that have a recent version of
iMovie. You’ll need to secure a firewire cable in 405 or 127 in order to import and export your footage from and to the camcorder. Make sure you put the battery back on charge when you’re done, and repack the system correctly for future users.

(Since there are only 3 camcorder systems, but 4 groups, there will be a signup sheet posted outside of SEC 012. You may use your own camcorder, and borrow a tripod and wireless mic from us)

5. The assignment is due on miniDV tape on Monday, October 20th at 9:00AM. Don’t wait to organize this because you’ll probably be doing another assignment (one hour long with one partner) during the end of this time period.
